Top 10 Places to Study in Singapore

Tertiary Exams are coming. In fact for some of the undergrads, it has already started. Where do you study for your exams ? SGTOP10 finds out 10 conducive places where you can live peacefully for the next 2-3 weeks with your lecture notes, tutorials and lappy.

10 National Libraries
All National Libraries have free wireless services and there should be one community library nearby where you stay. However not all libraries provide study facilities. Moreover, if you are studying alone, you may have to risk losing your belongings if you need to go to the washroom unless you can find this really friendly guy that can help you to look after the stuff. You need to share the 4 seater tables with strangers too.

Comfort Factor **

Library @ Sengkang is not a conducive place to study for hours. The library itself does not have study tables. The closest you can find will be the café inside the library. However the tables are small circular types. Barely big enough to put you 13” notebook on it.

.

9 Campus Library
During exam season, everyone will be mugging at their lecture notes and tutorials. Peer pressure will make sure you really do the studies and not get distracted with something else. But you need to be early, else you will never be able to get a seat. Don’t believe me ? Check this video

Comfort Factor ***

Depends if you get a good location. It can goes from **** to *.

.

8 Home / Hostel
The simplest. Where you sleep = Where you eat = Where you study. However there are a lot of distractions . You bed, your computer, your television. Inviting a study buddy over might help.

Comfort Factor ****

Home definitely is the most comfortable place but it may not be the most conducive place to study due to the huge amount of distractions available.

.

7 Book a 5* Hotel 5 star hotel room
Assuming $150 a night, depends on how many nights you need, this probably could only be afforded by the rich.

Comfort Factor *****

You get a study table, a king size bed , total privacy. When you are sick and tired of the books, you can always go down for a swim to relax or have some retail therapy at the malls nearby. What more can you ask for ?

.

6 Coffee Joints image004
Starbucks, Coffee Bean, Spinelli . There are more coffee joints that you can imagine around you. Most of these have free wireless services ( usually is Wireless@SG ) and power points so that you can plug in your laptop and just stay there the whole day.

Comfort Factor ****

Really depends on which outlet you go to, the comfort factor varies. My personal favourite is Starbucks @ Centrepoint. Is situated on the upper deck and is cosy with ample powerpoints . Don’t ever go to the Starbucks at Paragon with the intention to study. If you don’t believe, go and check it out yourself .

.

5 Void Deck void deck
When I asked one of friends, “Where do you study for your exams” . This is her reply : “
Previously when I stayed at bishan, me and my sis would camp at the reading area at my void deck. It’s very peaceful, cooling and quiet (at about 11pm -5am) and away from distractions. Good place for people who lives nearby (so that its convenient), for people who smoke cos it’s open-air and best to choose one with a vending machine/7-11 nearby for that midnight snack (alternatively just bring your own). Just got to remember to bring dettol wipes in case someone inconsiderate left food or rubbish behind. “

Comfort Level **

Chairs aren’t exactly comfortable. If you get lucky , you get some wanderers trying to figure out what you are doing or even approach you. I rather do it at home : )

.

4 Fast Food Joints study at macdonals
Provides a cheaper alternative to Coffee Joints.
Gets a bit noisy

Comfort Factor **

When the lunch or after-school crowd starts to rush in, you will probably be more interested in what they are doing then what the books want to tell you.

Suggested venues : Try the macdonald at Kallang / Stadium Road.

.

31 Airport
Airport used to be a conducive place for studying due to the peace and the large available space in an air conditioned environment. But in recent years has created a lot of dissatisfaction from the commuters at the airport. I believe it is no longer possible to do this at the airport. Does anyone know? study at the airport
.

21 Around the Campus
There are numerous areas to study around the campus beside the library and the hostel. There are reading rooms, study areas, canteens which you can see groups of students forming study groups and buried in their lecture notes.

Comfort Factor **
Most of these places are more noisy and does not have air conditioning .

11 The last one belongs to you!
SGTOP10 deliberately left the last one empty. Tell us where you think is the most conducive place to study and you could just walk away with a pair of movie tickets!

  • IMHO, the worst and best place is my house. Best because I can turn off everything that is noisy but worst because there are too many entertainment over my house. :p

  • Turn off all your entertainment lo. Or lock yourself in an empty room

Some of my favourite study places:

    1. Starbucks at Citylink and Shaw Towers because the staff are great enough to even chat with you about your academics

    2. Coffee Bean at Singapore Expo, although it closes promptly 6pm, the tables and chairs are not kept so you can stay as long as you like ( provided you have transport back)

    3. MacDonalds at King Albert Park is a favourite haunt for students. Its almost a mutually agreed thing amongst customers to keep a low volume.

    4. Community Centres/Clubs Reading rooms/study rooms if available. they usually charge a small fee though like $12/year e.g. Serangoon CC

    5. Carls Junior at East Coast for its free drinks refills and 24 hours opening hours.

    SY,
The starbucks at Citylink issit the one above the MRT station ? The Shaw Towers one like a bit packed and the tables are small lei. I still think Centrepoint is the best. heh

I think i will go give Carls Junior at ECP a try. Do they have free wireless there?

I do agree Shaw towers is a bit crowded. I was referring to the star bucks at the end of city link, beside 7-eleven.

vaguely remember there’s wireles but I think there was very little or no powerpoints cos my laptop died there.

Starbucks at Millenia is good too.

  • sengkangboy
