As today is the birthday of the undeniably vivacious but yet demure Yours Truly, a fabulous idea was born of Yours Truly’s mind. Why not a list of birthdays of the important and pivotal figures and events in Singapore’s history?
So what is exactly a birthday? Merriam-Webster defines it as,
1 a : the day of a person’s birth
1 b : a day of origin
2 : an anniversary of a birth
Well yes yes quite frankly a no brainer explanation. But you would be surprised that not everyone celebrates birthdays. In fact there are a couple of religious beliefs that oppose to having birthdays celebrated!
Anyway this is not about them. This is about important birthdays in Singapore history. And that is why Yours Truly had scoured through the dates in Singapore history during the last few visits to the museums and had personally handpicked out a list of birthdays that best exemplifies the nation’s flow of time.
Contrary to popular misconceptions, the museum or more correctly the Musaeum in Alexandria, which was attached to the infamous Library, was not the first museum ever in the world. Generally the earliest museums were attributed to Plato though there was not enough evidence to substantiate the claim.
The word museum is derived from the Greek word Mouseion, which means a place of worship dedicated to the Muses, the Goddesses of the arts, science and literature.
“: an institution devoted to the procurement, care, study, and display of objects of lasting interest or value; also : a place where objects are exhibited”
There are many and all kinds of museums out there, from major collections generally in cities to smaller general collections or even smaller collections to a specific subject or person.
Unbelievably as it is, in Singapore itself, there are 51 museums spread all across the island! Yes… and so Yours Truly has taken the liberty of giving you a grand tour of the least known ones.

Marriage is simply a union between two people in love. Traditionally the word alludes to heterosexual couples, with most homosexual couples preferring the term partnership.
The earliest documented marital laws dated back to at least Mesopotamian times, and we can draw forth a conjecture that along with it the concept of a marriage proposal also evolved similarly.
But what is a proposal? Merriam-Webster defines a proposal as,
“2 a : something proposed : suggestion
b : offer; specifically : an offer of marriage”
Of course marriage proposals varies dramatically from culture to culture, ever changing along with the times. There are of course accepted traditional forms of proposal that changed very little in the course of the centuries within a specific culture.
Even a small nation like Singapore has its own unique flavour of marriage proposal styles. Being multi-racial and all, encompassing of other cultures and with our local idiosyncrasies, you would be surprised to learn just how much local flavour you can inject into a marriage proposal.
