10 Michael Jackson Songs Singaporeans Loved

Love him or Hate Him, He is Michael Jackson. On June 25th, Michael Jackson was pronounced dead. He suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this afternoon at his Holmby Hills home and paramedics were unable to revive him.

Michael Joseph Jackson or as known as “The King of POP” was born in 29 August 1958 in Indiana, United States. He was the 7th child of the Jackson family. As early as age 11, Michael Jackson started his professional music career as a member of The Jackson 5, and began a solo career in 1971.

In the early 1980s, he was the dominant figure in POP music and was credited for transforming the music video into an art form and promotional tool. This helped the MTV Music channel quickly become poplular. With his stage work and music videos, he also popularized a number of complicated dance moves, such as the robot and the moonwalk.

A quick look at his lifetime achievements includes: 2 time inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, 13 Grammy Awards, 13 number one singles, and multiple Guinness World Records – including one for “Most Successful Entertainer of All Time”. His success has made him part of POP culture for almost four decades!

On his Dangerous tour here in Singapore on the 29th August 1993, Michael Jackson performed on his birthday to a crowd of 47,000 fans at the Singapore national stadium.

Top 10 Singlish words – Talking the Singaporean way

Singlish basically means Singaporean English. In Wikipedia, it is actually quoted as the “First language” for Singapore!! Almost every born Singaporean uses some form of Singlish; that is what makes us unique and different. A quick Google on Singlish returns more than 150,000 results.

We bring Singlish everywhere we go. Unknowingly, we uses it even when we talk with our friends of other nationalities. I still remember once when I was on a business trip to the the States, we were having some off-topic discussions over the dinner table on some techie stuff when I said “oh, this one don’t have lah.”. Everyone just stared at me. Knowing that no one really understood what I was trying to express, I quickly added “Oh this is Singlish”.

Here is another example which happens very frequently to me. Whenever I am overseas, friends who like to greet me with “Hey, How are you doing today?” usually will get a reply “ok lah. You leh? ”
