SingaporeTop10 Great tasting budget Wines: Shiraz

What do cars, petrol and booze have in common in Singapore? That’s right, they are all taxed heavily to discourage consumption.

To help you enjoy a great glass of wine without completely emptying your bank account, we have put together this list of the top 10 value-for-money Shiraz vintners, available in Singapore. Our basic criteria is that a great tasting, afffordable wine should be available in Singapore for about $20 per bottle, at our favorite wine shops of Cold Storage and NTUC Fairprice. Most of the wines on the list have a usual price of between $23 and $30 per bottle, but every week one or more of these favorites are on sale near or below our target price of ~ $20.

Shiraz is a dry, spicy wine and is a specialty of Australia. South Africa and California also grow this grape, and in France it is called Syrah. The wines on this list have a nice aroma and deliver a consistent drinking experience for the money. There are cheaper bottles of Shiraz out there, but their quality is very inconsistent or just plain awful. The wines on this list seldom disappoint.

Many vintners have begun the conversion from cork seals to screw top seals. The screw top seals are much better, and completely eliminate the possibility of a bad bottle of wine due to a contaminated cork. Whenever you have the choice, take the bottle with the screw top!

Here is our top ten list, ranked on taste, aroma and finish, independent of the “usual price”. We also show what a good sale price for each of the wines is, based on our shopping experiences over time.
